In the spring of 2009 the world was introduced to a young, outspoken designer from Atlanta. Anthony L. Williams, a contestant on season 7 of Project Runway, stood out from his fellow competitors immediately, receiving acclaim not only for his designs but also for his boisterous charm and whit. Winning over the hearts of many, he still continues his successful journey forward.
Born and raised in the Birmingham, Alabama, Anthony did not have the exposure to fashion and style that many of his contemporaries had. His first glimpse of what would drive his passion came in the form of beautiful gowns worn by women in his church.
As is often the case in traditional southern communities, church was a foundation of the community and Anthony spent many hours a week admiring these strong glamorous women in their Sunday best. In Anthony's own words "The sparkle and the glamour of these beautiful pieces of art served as a great escape from my daily reality. I did not know that I exactly wanted to be in fashion, but I knew I wanted to be surrounded by excitement and quality for the rest of my life."
Self-taught, Anthony began to create his own garments. His first design came in the form of a vest in high school. Soon, Anthony would take the next step at the University of Alabama, majoring in Apparel and Textile Design.
College would not only hone his skills but offer him one of his first memorable design opportunities when he created an evening gown for a friend's cotillion ball. This proved a pivotal moment in his life as the trust placed in him by his friend and her joy in wearing the gown gave him the confidence to follow his dreams.
After graduation, Anthony made the move to Atlanta where the economic viability of the luxury market began to diminish. Anthony was faced with an unknown future and was unsure what his next move should be. Around that time, a friend sent him a link to audition for Project Runway Season 7. Just three days shy of the cutoff date, Anthony decided he had nothing left to lose and submitted himself for consideration.
While confident of his work, there was no guarantee that he would make it. Always the optimist, Anthony pushed aside the criticism and cherished the fact he could be compared to his design heroes. In the end, his charm, whit and design aptitude were enough to secure a coveted spot on the show.
Topping his achievements on the show, his dress landed on the cover of Marie Claire worn by fashion icon Heidi Klum. While he was not the winner of season 7, Anthony won over legions of fans and continues to grow his public profile.
He was awarded the key to the city of Birmingham as well as an Innovative Designer of the Year award from Bauder College, he is well on his way to establishing himself as a name in fashion and entertainment.
He has appeared at Neiman Marcus to share a few pieces of his collection with fans and enjoyed "Couture and Cocktails" with over 300 fans at the W hotel in Buckhead, where he was named Style Ambassador. He is also a style ambassador for Macy's in which he travels to stores all over the U.S. to host and meet and greet with clients to offer styling tips during Fashion shows.
Anthony's schedule remains busy with personal appearances, freelance designing and a variety of projects. Recently finishing a run as a style consultant for a VH1 Single Ladies which aired in June, Anthony is pursuing his dream of sharing his experience with the world.
He enjoyed the opportunity to style Stacey Dash as the lead character cast as Val. As he says himself "Television introduced me to the world as a funny, southern, gay, black man that is sassy and full of entertaining one-liners. I am more than the image and personality that was projected through that reality show. I am a creative individual who celebrates every opportunity to have a human experience."
Get to know his face...you'll be seeing it everywhere.
